SUMMARY:Injury Prevention Masterclass with Accelerando at the Nashville Symphony
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Nashville Symphony Accelerando Masterclas series\, Music Strong will be presenting a masterclass on injury prevention for musicians. We will cover statistics\, warning signs\, and action steps as well as breaking into sections and doing specific corrective exercise routines for your instrument. This helps stop injury before it starts by increasing our body awareness\, understanding around playing posture\, injury and overuse and giving a solid exercise plan to keep our bodies in top shape. \n  \n  \n  \n\nTRAINING YOUNG MUSICIANS FOR THE FUTURE \n\n\nWhat is Accelerando? \nThe Nashville Symphony’s Accelerando initiative is an intensive music education program designed to prepare gifted young students for music at the collegiate level and beyond. Accelerando seeks to create professional opportunities for young musicians by providing them with instruction\, mentorship\, performance experiences and assistance with applying to music schools. With access to the resources of a major American orchestra\, these students will be able to realize their full potential and form the next generation of orchestra musicians. \nWhat does the program entail? \nStudents in the program will receive: \n\nYear-round instruction from a Nashville Symphony musician or highly qualified local instructor\nComplimentary tickets to Nashville Symphony Classical Series concerts for the student and their immediate family\nOpportunities to perform in solo recitals and chamber music\nAccess to masterclasses and workshops with top musicians and educators\nFunding for summer activities\, including workshops\, camps\, lessons and/or classes\nInstruction at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music in music theory and music history\nCollege and career counseling\nFinancial and logistical assistance in applying for music school (transportation and room costs\, scheduling\, etc.)\n\n\n  \nLearn more about Accelerando here.

SUMMARY:Becoming Music Strong: A Residency in Injury Prevention at Utah State University
DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between the Schools of Music and Kinesiology – this 2-day residency will address the 90% injury rate among musicians. A 60-90 minute workshop/presentation for both schools will address causes\, warning signs and solutions. 4 studio workshops will provide corrective exercises for each instrument. 1-1 sessions will also be offered. \n  \nAngela’s residency is officially a 2-day residency and is collaboration with the Kinesiology and Health Sciences Department. This inclues a 60-90 minute presentation/workshop for the entire school and faculty on injuries musicians face\, the staggering statistics\, warning signs and what they can start to do to prevent them. This presentation will also address the unique challenges musicians face in receiving care and provide an opportunity for the Kinesiology department to gain further understanding on how to better understand and help musicians. A potential research study on the efficacy of musician strength training may be done as well. There will be up to 4\nstudio classes (to encompass winds\, brass\, percussion and strings) where postural demands of individual instruments and their unique muscle compensations will be addressed. These classes will include corrective exercise routines applicable to each instrument. Additionally\, Angela will give up to 10 1-1 sessions with students. \nUp to 90% of musicians will experience playing related pain or injury over the course of their careers and many times\, these injuries begin in college. Many times\, neither students\, teachers nor physicians don’t understand what to do with musician injuries or how to address them\nproperly\, leading to students and teachers both frustrated and the student in pain\, often considering switching careers or majors. The benefit of Angela’s residency is that both students and faculty will have a better understanding of what to do when warning signs of injury show\,\npreventing injury before it starts\, leading to increased playing endurance\, lower rates of injury\, more positive outlook and overall allowing the student a quicker return to stronger playing. The kinesiology department has also been invited to better understand this issue.\nAn additional benefit to the school is that she is one of very few professionals in her field of injury prevention\, an area the National Association of Schools of Music places high emphasis on\, and this residency helps Utah State meet the health and wellness standards for NASM accreditation. Additionally\, this gives students a unique opportunity for individual attention when it would not otherwise be physically or financially possible.
